Nigel’s father was giving him that Look again, the quiet one he liked to wear with his lips pressed together and his head slowly shaking, where he spoke no words but his eyes belied his feelings. His son was a disappointment. He hadn’t done anything wrong, per se, but he certainly hadn’t done anything right either. There was potential there that he simply was not realising, and one could perhaps forgive a father for being frustrated. Surely that was allowed. Surely that was, to some degree, ordinary. After all, his disappointment was borne from concern. Mr. Keswick had just expected more than silent mediocrity.
